A Glimpse at AI and Education in 2023

The year 2023 is set to be exciting for the education sector in India as it gears up to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into various aspects of teaching and learning. With the government’s push towards a digital-first approach and increasing adoption of online learning, AI is poised to revolutionize how education is delivered and accessed.

In Delhi, a report released by UNESCO called for implementing a comprehensive regulatory framework for the utilization of artificial intelligence in education. The report also projected that the AI market in India has the potential to reach INR 780 crores by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.2%, according to its analysis.

With AI in education expected to be a mainstay in the future of education, there has been a growing interest among educational institutions to find ways of tapping into its benefits. So let’s take a closer look at how the implications of AI has for students, teachers, and the education ecosystem at large.

⚛️AI Personalized Learning

AI-powered adaptive learning systems are being designed to analyze students’ strengths, weaknesses, and learning pace to provide customized learning experiences. These systems enable educators to identify areas where students need more practice and provide them with targeted learning activities that cater to their individual needs. The use of AI in personalized learning has improved student engagement, performance, and retention rates. It also allows teachers to spend more time on one-on-one interactions with students, providing the necessary guidance to help them excel in their studies.

⚛️Efficient Administrative Systems

Artificial Intelligence in education can transform the administrative functions by streamlining processes and making them more effective. Automated systems can assist with tasks such as scheduling, grading, and attendance, freeing up teachers’ time to focus on delivering engaging and personalized instruction. Furthermore, AI-powered chatbots can be utilized to handle administrative tasks such as answering frequently asked questions and providing support to students and parents. These chatbots can provide quick and accurate responses, enhancing the overall efficiency of the system. By implementing artificial intelligence in schools, educational institutions can improve the quality of their services while reducing costs, allowing them to allocate resources more effectively.

⚛️Improved Teacher Training

Incorporating AI-powered professional development programs in teacher training can be a game-changer in enhancing the skills and expertise of educators. Such programs employ data-driven insights to assess the areas of improvement and recommend tailored solutions for professional development. This innovative approach not only enhances the quality of instruction but also helps students achieve better learning outcomes. Furthermore, by leveraging the power of AI, teachers can stay updated with the latest teaching practices and improve their pedagogical skills.

⚛️Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education Sector of India

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has brought about exciting changes in the Indian education system, including integrating modern subjects like Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the curriculum. NCERT is already working on a new National Curriculum Framework for School Education in line with these recommendations. Besides, since 2019, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a step ahead by introducing AI as a subject in Class IX and Class XI in their affiliated schools. This exciting development opens up new possibilities for students to explore this cutting-edge field and prepare them for the future job market.

The Indian government is creating an educational tool that employs ChatGPT, a Microsoft-supported AI chatbot, to give students answers to curriculum-based questions in any Indian language. A video demonstration of the tool displayed a student sending a math question in Hindi via voice message on WhatsApp. The message was speedily transcribed to Devanagari script, with the answer appearing almost instantly. In another example, a student sent a screenshot of a math problem from a textbook to a WhatsApp chatbot and received the solution within seconds.

In an effort to enhance the availability of skilled workforce in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has recommended that all AICTE-approved institutions introduce AI as an elective in their B.Tech courses. Accordingly, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have been granted the freedom to design their own curricula and collaborate with universities worldwide, with many of them already offering a range of AI-related courses, including Machine Learning, Cyber-Physical Security, and Digital Image Processing.

⚛️The Final Word

Education is the key to unlocking the potential of India’s demographic dividend, but it’s essential to address the cost and reach of education. And as the world of education evolves, innovative tools such as AI are paving the way for a new era of transformation. With technology rapidly advancing, the possibilities for making education more student-centric, flexible, and collaborative are endless.
